Q magazine is a lot more "Crowded" than the others, the Cover is full of informative text, unlike other magazines the Masterhead is in one corner, this is because it is only one letter, the oicture covers the master head showing that it takes priority over the it. the selling line "Britain's biggest music magazine" is fact brought to their advantage, this is confusing however as it could mean biggest in size or most purchased

Kerrang Legends - their answer to NME Originals

"KERRANG"'sSpecial Edition of their magazine acts the same as NME's, however the Master head is much larger and noticeable. taking the highlight from the topic "METALLICA" also the main picture is much smaller than most, taking up a small amount of the page, this magazine is directly targeted at fans of Metallica, preferably people older than 25 years old, who have been fans of Metallica for along period of time

There is a black and whit theme, using less bright colours to give a more serious effect. the Name "METALLICA" is in all capitals and black, it gives it a more formal look. the page has a a torn effect giving the affect that the two parts of the page should be one, despite thier diference, the top half is not very colouful using whites and blacks, but the pottom, uses yellow text and red background, this could show that the article will take a formal look at Meatallica but also a look at thier more"wild" aspect, his is shown with the words "it's been insane!" which is in bold and stands out within that part of the cover

This NME magazine is the usual layout, Big noticable Master head big picture of main article covering most of the cover. there is a big highlight at the top of the page, very notceable as it will attract fans of he Arctic Monkeys who are featuredin the highliht,the main stroy is of the Foo Fighters very well known (and liked) bandthat will provoke people to buy it. There is also competition to win studio time(this is good because usualy these competititions usualy give away the latest gadgets, but his interacts withthe music aspects)

Th Name "FOO FIGHTERS" is in all capitals and is big and bold thisattracts attention to the article

Music magazines often have "special edition" issues which have different layouts to the others, the Master head is often very discreet, like this NME speialon nirvana. the hightight instead of the Masterhead is the band name (almost acting as the new masterhead), no longer focusing on on people buying it because it is an NME magazine but because of the band it features

In the same way magazines NME highligts who and what is inside on the front cover, they all focus on different aspects on the special edition which is still fcused only on Nirvana

although the magazines focused on the Band Nirvana,it seems to thefront covermainly consists of pictures of only Kurt coban,this is because he is the most recondisable member of the bandand can be used to attract consumers.

College Magazine Evaluation



I started the project by making a Blog, I copied the brief into the Blog so that I can see it as I work, I then listed the convections of a magazine, and the convections of a contents page. I then started viewing and evaluating magazine covers from different genres of magazines, trying to sum up what all the magazines had in common and what was essential to a good magazine cover. I made a very quick and simple draft of a front cover, I highlighted the essential features of a magazine such as The Master head, The main picture and a main article.

As the magazine Is for college, and student I looked at magazines, for a young age group, like KERRANG. The first pat of the magazine I had done is the master head, I got influence from other magazines for the font, which I created in Photoshop, the Master head is simply “Wyke Magazine”, I didn’t find it necessary to be anything else. I used the selling slogan “The BEST source of news at wyke” because it attracts its readers at wyke, I capitalised the word “BEST” to entice people to purchase the magazine. Then to see how effective the Master head I made was, I added it to my first draft of the front cover so that I could get the right size of match the rest of the magazine.

I went online to find a suitable barcode for my magazine, which I found on Google images. I then began making the finishing piece, I started with the photo as I could make up a story around it, I thought it suitable to have a member of wyke staff to feature, as it is a college magazine. I Started by asking Ray, who works in the media department, allow me to photograph him for the magazine, but he refused, so I began asking my friends, the all refused as well so I had a photo taken of myself, after viewing the magazines I noticed at the photo is often the dominant part of the magazine and even covers the master head, I went for the same effect with my photograph, it covers most of the front cover, and some of the Master head.

The background for the Magazine I chose because it is bright and suitable for the type of magazine, for example, a black background would not support a college feel.
I then decided on suitable stories for the magazine, some I chose because they are actual college news or events, and some because I thought they where possible college news. I then decided to work on the contents page in Photoshop, I started with the Title “Contents page” and then made the boxes to separate the two parts of my contents page.

To conclude, I had created a front cover and mock up contents page to a college magazine, by reviewing a few magazines to gain ideas for my own magazine, I then Put together the individual conventions of a college magazine, to be suitable for the Students who the magazine is targeted at.

Unusual Layout

"Rolling Stone" Magazine, the cover has the title at the top covered with the head of Barack Obama, The picture Coveres almost the entire cover.

Another music Magazine cover, NME, this magazine is set out completely different, the title, most of the sub headings and description are all bunched up onto the left hand side, leaving a large space for a portrait picture of Dave Grohl, frontman of the Foo Fighters, Unlike KERRANG which had them all on the cover.

The Music Magazine "KERRANG" has a very simple very common design for thier front covers, Big Tiltle at the top of the cover, the res covered with a large photo, in this case the "Foo Fighters", the picture is Often covered with a subtitle or in the name of the band and a brief discription of what is on the inside.
